Designer Sofas Australia: Curved, Chaise & Statement Sofas

A beautiful sofa doesn't just sit in a room. It gives the room its personality. Our designer sofas bring together sculptural curved sofas, chaise sofas, a slipcover modular sofa and statement three-seaters in bouclé, chenille, velvet and linen blends, in colours from ivory and natural to sage, emerald, ochre, butterscotch and leopard print.

Whether you're furnishing an apartment, a family home or a large open-plan living room, this guide covers sizes, seat depth and height, fabrics, styling and care, using the real measurements of every sofa in our range.

Measurements are taken from each product page. Always check the latest specifications, and your doorways, before ordering.

Choosing a Designer Sofa

What makes a designer sofa different?

A designer sofa is defined by its silhouette, upholstery and detailing as much as its comfort. Look for a distinctive shape (curved, low-slung or tailored), a fabric with real texture, a seat depth that suits how you sit, and a frame built for everyday use. Our Geneva, Tampa, Colorado and Birkshire sofas are built on timber or hardwood frames with springs or webbing.

What size sofa do I need?

Measure the wall or zone the sofa will anchor. As a guide, leave about 40 to 50cm between the sofa and the coffee table, and 75 to 90cm for walkways. A 240cm sofa suits a medium to large living room; in a smaller room, look at the 180cm Colorado 2 Seater or the 200cm Safari and 203.5cm Sienna.

How many people fit on a 3 seater sofa?

Three adults, comfortably, on most of our three-seaters. Check the usable seat width, not just the overall width: the Sienna seat is 160cm wide, Geneva 184cm, Birkshire 190cm, Aerin 195cm and Colorado 200cm.

Curved Sofas

A curved sofa softens a room full of straight lines and works beautifully in open-plan spaces, near large windows and around a round coffee table.

  • Geneva: our signature curved sofa on a sturdy wooden frame with webbing and springs, in bouclĂ© (Ivory, Green or Black Onyx) or chenille (Natural, Sage or Butterscotch). 231 Ă— 91 Ă— 78cm, with a 184cm-wide seat.
  • Tampa: a wrap-around silhouette with curved arms and slender blackened metal legs, in Turtle Dove, Emerald or Bronze. 231 Ă— 88 Ă— 70cm, with a 44cm seat height and 60cm seat depth.
  • Sienna: sculptural curves, a generous bench seat, slender bolster arms and panelled legs, in Macadamia, Ivory or Brown. 203.5 Ă— 98 Ă— 81.5cm.
  • Dominic: a low, winged sculptural profile with plush cushioning, in Ivory or Butterscotch. 240 Ă— 95 Ă— 78cm.

Are curved sofas practical?

Yes. They seat as many people as a straight sofa of the same width, and the rounded shape makes conversation easier. They do need a little more breathing room, so they're best floated in the room rather than pushed hard against a wall.

Classic & Tailored Three-Seaters

Chaise & Modular Sofas

Geneva chaise sofas

The curved Geneva with a deep chaise for stretching out, in Sage left chaise, Sage right chaise, Natural left chaise or Natural right chaise. Each measures 260 Ă— 160 Ă— 76cm, with a 216cm-wide seat, a 135cm-deep chaise and four matching scatter cushions.

Left or right chaise: which do I need?

Stand facing where the sofa will go and decide which side you want the chaise on. Then check the product photos to confirm the orientation before ordering, and make sure the chaise won't block a doorway or walkway.

Birkshire slipcover modular sofa

The Birkshire Slip Cover Modular Sofa is a relaxed Hamptons and coastal favourite in an 80% viscose, 20% linen slipcover. It is 280 Ă— 96 Ă— 85cm overall, made up of right and left arm-facing sections (100cm wide each) and an armless section (80cm wide), on a solid hardwood frame with inner spring suspension. A matching scatter cushion is included.

What should I check before buying a modular sofa?

Confirm the overall assembled footprint, the size of each section, and that every section will fit through your doorways, hallways and lifts. Plan the whole arrangement on the floor with masking tape before ordering.

Sofas by Fabric

Bouclé sofas

Bouclé's looped texture suits curved shapes and pale, organic interiors. Choose the Geneva in Ivory, Green or Black Onyx bouclé, or the Tampa in Turtle Dove or Bronze. Bouclé is forgiving of everyday crumbs and dust, but the loops can snag on claws and jewellery. See more in our bouclé furniture edit.

Chenille sofas

Chenille is soft, textured and less shiny than velvet. Choose the Geneva in Natural, Sage or Butterscotch chenille or as a chaise sofa, the Tampa in Emerald, or the leopard-print Safari 3 Seater Sofa in Leopard Chenille.

Velvet sofas

Velvet brings rich colour and a soft sheen. Choose the Colorado Satin Moss Velvet, the Aerin in Taupe Velvet, or the Birkshire Ochre Velvet with its removable slipcover. Velvet can show pressure marks and shading, which is a normal characteristic of the pile.

Linen and linen-blend sofas

For a relaxed, natural look, the Birkshire White Linen and modular sofa are 80% viscose, 20% linen; the Tailor 3 Seater Sofa in Ivory Linen is 78% viscose, 14% cotton, 8% linen; and the Colorado 2 Seater Sofa in Natural Linen is 56% viscose, 31% polyester, 13% linen. The Colorado 3 Seater and Aerin in Natural Linen are polyester fabrics with a linen look, which makes them easier to live with.

Textured woven sofas

The Sienna and Dominic are upholstered in soft woven polyester with gentle texture, in warm neutrals that suit coastal, Hamptons and contemporary interiors. The Sienna Macadamia has a 30,000-rub Martindale rating.

Seat Depth & Seat Height

Overall dimensions don't tell you how a sofa sits. Seat depth and height do.

  • Seat depth: Aerin 56cm (upright), Tampa 60cm, Geneva 64 to 71cm, Colorado and Safari 65cm, Sienna 67cm, Tailor 71cm and Birkshire 76cm (deep lounging).
  • Seat height: Safari 38cm (low-slung), Colorado 42cm, Dominic and Tailor 43cm, Tampa 44cm, Sienna 46cm, Geneva 46.5cm, Aerin 47cm and Birkshire 52cm (easiest to get in and out of).

Which sofa is best for lounging?

Choose a deep seat: the Birkshire (76cm) or Tailor (71cm), or a Geneva chaise sofa for stretching out fully. For more upright sitting, choose the Aerin or Tampa.

Styling Your Designer Sofa

  • Coffee table: contrast soft upholstery with marble, timber or metal from our coffee and side tables. A round table echoes a curved sofa.
  • Armchairs: pair with a matching Ivory, Butterscotch or Wheat Dominic Arm Chair, a Geneva occasional chair in Natural or Sage, or a contrasting piece from our luxury armchairs.
  • Rug: anchor the seating zone with one of our designer rugs, large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it.
  • Cushions: layer a few luxury cushions in contrasting textures, without crowding the seat.
  • Lighting: balance the room with a floor lamp beside the sofa or a chandelier above.
  • Art: hang wall art about 20 to 25cm above the sofa back, roughly two-thirds of the sofa's width.

Let one piece lead. If your sofa is a bold colour or pattern, keep the surrounding furniture calmer.

Which sofa suits my style?

  • Contemporary: Geneva, Tampa and Dominic.
  • Coastal and Hamptons: Birkshire White Linen, Sienna Ivory and the Birkshire modular. See our Hamptons rugs to complete the look.
  • Mid-century: Colorado, with its channel tufting and low profile.
  • Traditional and transitional: Aerin and Tailor.
  • Statement and glamorous: Safari Leopard, Geneva Black Onyx, Tampa Emerald and Birkshire Ochre Velvet.

Sofa Care

  • Professional dry cleaning is recommended for all of our sofas. The Birkshire slipcovers are removable, but they're dry clean only, not machine washable.
  • Scotchguarding is recommended to protect against stains.
  • Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub.
  • Vacuum regularly with an upholstery attachment, and plump cushions to keep their shape.
  • Keep sofas out of strong direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Many of our fabrics are individually dyed, so slight colour variations between batches are normal.

Buying a Sofa Online

What should I check before ordering?

Check the overall dimensions, the seat depth and height, the fabric composition and the care instructions. Then measure every doorway, hallway, staircase and lift on the way to the room.

Do the sofas need assembly?

The Safari and Tailor arrive fully assembled, and the Sienna needs no assembly. Most others need partial assembly, usually just screwing in the legs.

How long does delivery take?

Most sofas leave our partner warehouse within 3 to 7 business days, with delivery Australia-wide. Each product page shows its dispatch time.

Designer Sofa FAQs

What is a designer sofa?

A sofa chosen for its distinctive design as much as its comfort: a sculptural curve, a tailored silhouette, a rich fabric or a statement colour.

What is a statement sofa?

A sofa that becomes the focal point of the room. Ours include the leopard-print Safari, the Geneva in Black Onyx bouclé, the Tampa in Emerald and the Birkshire in Ochre Velvet.

What is the best sofa for a small living room?

The 180cm Colorado 2 Seater, the 200cm Safari or the 203.5cm Sienna. Low arms and visible legs also help a room feel larger.

What is the best sofa for a large open-plan room?

A Geneva chaise sofa (260cm) or the Birkshire modular (280cm), or a 240 to 252cm three-seater such as the Colorado, Dominic or Tailor paired with armchairs.

What is the difference between a modular and a sectional sofa?

The terms overlap. A modular sofa is made of separate sections you can arrange; a sectional is usually a fixed L-shape, such as a chaise sofa.

Are bouclé sofas comfortable?

Yes. Comfort comes from the cushioning, seat depth and frame. Bouclé adds a soft, tactile surface on top.

Are velvet sofas hard to maintain?

Not especially. Vacuum regularly, blot spills quickly and expect some natural shading of the pile. Professional cleaning is recommended.

Is chenille a good sofa fabric?

Yes. Chenille is soft, textured and less prone to showing marks than velvet, which makes it a good choice for everyday living.

Are linen sofas good for everyday use?

Linen blends are breathable and relaxed, and they soften with use. Expect some natural creasing, and choose a removable slipcover like the Birkshire if you want easier cleaning.

Can slipcover sofas be machine washed?

Not ours. The Birkshire slipcovers are removable for professional dry cleaning only.

What is a comfortable sofa seat height?

Most people are comfortable at 42 to 47cm. Our range runs from a low 38cm (Safari) to 52cm (Birkshire).

Should my armchairs match my sofa?

Not necessarily. A contrasting colour or texture often looks more considered. If you love a matching look, the Dominic and Geneva ranges have chairs to suit.
