Statement Dining Tables: How to Choose a Table With Presence
Some dining tables are simply somewhere to eat. A statement dining table gives the whole room its personality, through a sculptural base, a sweeping oval top, richly grained timber or a dramatic finish.
Our statement dining tables range from a 100cm ivory pedestal table to 2.4m ovals that seat up to ten. Finishes include white, black, antique gold, ivory, oak, smoked oak and walnut. This guide uses real product dimensions to help you choose the right shape, size, base and finish for your room.
What Makes a Dining Table a Statement Piece?
A statement dining table is designed to be the focal point of the room, even when it isn't set for dinner. It usually stands out through one or more of these:
- A sculptural base: ribbed, fluted, tapered or twin column pedestals rather than four plain legs.
- A distinctive shape: generous ovals, organic outlines or a perfectly proportioned round.
- Material and finish: grained oak and walnut, matte microcement, satin black or antique gold.
- Proportion: a table that suits the room's scale, not necessarily the biggest one.
A statement table doesn't have to be large. A well-proportioned round table on a striking pedestal can make more impact than a much bigger conventional design.

As a general rule, allow 55–65cm of table edge per person, and more for wide upholstered chairs.
Sculptural Bases: Why the Base Matters
On a statement table, the base is often the main event. It also decides where chairs can go, so it's worth understanding before you buy.
Single pedestal bases
A central pedestal keeps the floor clear and lets chairs tuck in anywhere around a round table. Our pedestal designs include the ribbed cylindrical Amalfi, the tapered Mykonos, Sonoma and Byron Bay, and the Riviera Round with its brushed gold rim.
Check the overhang (the distance from base to edge). The white Amalfi 1.5m, for example, has a 62cm base and a 44cm overhang, which gives generous knee room.
Twin column and asymmetric bases
Longer statement tables usually stand on two bases. These look striking and leave the ends of the table open for seating:
- Brunella Oval: an asymmetric pairing of a fluted rectangular pedestal (60 × 20cm) and a smooth cylindrical column (50 × 50cm).
- Pearson: two ribbed cylindrical drum columns, inset 25cm from each end with 80.5cm between them.
- Beaumont: sculptural fluted pedestals under a softly rounded top.
- Riviera Rectangular: two 51cm square bases, each finished with a brushed gold rim.
Organic shapes
The Piato Organic 2m in latte microcement has an irregular, pebble-like outline on a single pedestal. It's an easy way to bring a softer, more relaxed statement into an open-plan room.
Round, Oval or Rectangular?
Round statement dining tables
Round tables are sociable and suit square rooms, apartments and open-plan kitchens. The Riviera Round comes in 1.2m and 1.5m in ivory, oak and smoked oak. The Mykonos comes in 100, 120 and 160cm, Sonoma in 120 and 140cm, and Jonah in 140 and 160cm.
Oval statement dining tables
Ovals give you the seating of a rectangle with softer ends that are easier to move around. Our 2.4m ovals are the Amalfi Oval (white or black, seats 8–10) and the Brunella Oval (white, black or antique gold, seats up to ten).
Rectangular statement dining tables
Rectangular tables suit long rooms and formal entertaining. Choose the Riviera Rectangular in 2m or 2.4m, the 2.2m Pearson with its rounded-rectangle top, or the 2.4m Beaumont.
How Much Space Do You Need?
A statement table needs room to be appreciated as well as used. Allow about 90cm between the table edge and walls or furniture, or 100–120cm where people walk behind seated guests.
- 150cm round table: about 3.3 × 3.3m.
- 200 × 100cm table: about 3.8 × 2.8m.
- 240 × 100cm table: about 4.2 × 2.8m.
Our recommendation: Don't buy the biggest table that will physically fit. Choose the one that leaves the room feeling generous. Marking the outline on the floor with painter's tape is a quick way to check.
Choosing a Finish
White
White makes a sculptural base stand out, especially against darker floors or chairs. Choose the Amalfi in satin white ash veneer, round or oval, or the white Brunella, whose matte white top lets the timber grain show through. See all white dining tables.
Ivory and latte
Ivory is softer and warmer than white, and suits timber, stone and linen. The Mykonos is ivory microcement, the Riviera comes in ivory composite with gold rims, and the Piato is latte microcement.
Black
Black tables create strong contrast and suit pale walls, neutral upholstery and sculptural lighting. Choose the Amalfi in satin black ash veneer, in the 1.5m black round or the black oval, or the black Brunella Oval.
Oak, smoked oak and walnut
Timber brings warmth and grain while still making a statement. Options include the Riviera in oak and smoked oak, the Beaumont in walnut or natural (ice grey), the Pearson in natural or walnut veneer, and the Sonoma, whose tapered walnut veneer base sits under a white microcement top.
Antique gold
For full glamour, the antique gold Brunella Oval is finished in warm antique gold over a timber-grained top. Pair it with restrained upholstery and let the table shine. It also sits beautifully with our Art Deco furniture.
Microcement and stone resin
Microcement (Mykonos, Piato, and the Jonah and Sonoma tops) is a hand-applied, cement-based coating with a seamless matte finish. It resists everyday stains and scratches. The Byron Bay 160cm is stone resin with a soft speckled finish, suitable for indoor and alfresco dining. Clean both with a damp cloth or mild pH-neutral cleaner, and never use acidic products.
Choosing Chairs for a Statement Dining Table
- Sculptural table, simple chairs: if the base is dramatic, choose clean-lined upholstered chairs so the table stays the hero.
- Black table, neutral chairs: cream, oatmeal or natural linen softens black and looks sophisticated.
- Timber table, woven chairs: rattan and natural textures suit oak and walnut.
- Ivory table, dark timber chairs: walnut or black frames add contrast without overwhelming.
- Any table, velvet chairs: chocolate, rust, olive, navy or black velvet add richness and glamour.
Browse our dining chairs. As a rule, contrast works better than matching every detail; avoid pairing an elaborate base with equally elaborate chair frames.
Styling a Statement Dining Table
Lighting
A pendant or chandelier reinforces the table as the focal point. Choose a linear or elongated fitting for oval and rectangular tables, and a central pendant for round tables. As a starting point, hang it about 75–90cm above the tabletop. Explore our chandeliers.
Rug
Choose a rug that extends 60–75cm beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on it when pulled out. For a 240 × 100cm table, that means a rug of roughly 3.6–3.9m × 2.2–2.5m. Browse our rugs.
Centrepiece
One sculptural vase, bowl or low arrangement is more effective than several small pieces, and keeps sightlines clear across the table.
Give it room
Avoid crowding the dining area. A statement table looks best when it can be seen from several angles. A white or black buffet along one wall is usually all the extra furniture you need.
Indoor vs Outdoor Statement Dining Tables
Most statement dining tables are made for indoor use only, including veneer, composite and microcement designs. For alfresco dining, the Whitehaven range is made from water-resistant glass-fibre reinforced concrete, in a 1.2m round (seats 4) or a 2m oval (seats 6–8). The Byron Bay 160cm also suits indoor and alfresco spaces. See our outdoor furniture.
Frequently Asked Questions About Statement Dining Tables
What makes a dining table a statement piece?
Distinctive design that makes it the focal point of the room: a sculptural base, an unusual shape, beautiful materials or a dramatic finish.
Are statement dining tables practical for everyday use?
Yes, provided the size, base and surface suit your household. Check that chairs fit comfortably around the base and that the finish suits your cleaning routine.
What is a sculptural dining table?
A table with an expressive or architectural design, usually a distinctive pedestal, ribbed or fluted column, or organic shape, so it works as both furniture and art.
Are pedestal dining tables comfortable?
Usually very, because there are no corner legs. Comfort depends on the base width and the overhang. The Amalfi 1.5m, for example, has a 44cm overhang from a 62cm base.
What size statement dining table seats six?
A 150–160cm round table, or a 200–220cm rectangular or oval table. Options include the Riviera Round 1.5m, Mykonos 160cm, Riviera Rectangular 2m and Pearson 2.2m.
What size statement dining table seats eight to ten?
A 240cm table. The Amalfi Oval, Brunella Oval and Riviera Rectangular 2.4m all seat 8–10, and the Beaumont is also 2.4m.
What is the best shape for a statement dining table?
Round tables encourage conversation, ovals combine generous seating with soft lines, and rectangles suit long rooms and formal dining. Choose based on your room shape.
What colour dining table is best for a modern home?
White, ivory, black, oak and walnut all work. Choose based on your flooring, cabinetry and light: black and white for contrast, ivory and timber for warmth.
What dining chairs suit a sculptural dining table?
Simple upholstered, timber or woven chairs that don't compete with the base.
Can a statement dining table work in a minimalist interior?
Yes. One sculptural table, such as the Mykonos, Amalfi or Riviera Round, with restrained chairs and simple lighting gives a minimalist room a strong focal point without clutter.
What is the difference between a luxury and a statement dining table?
A luxury dining table emphasises quality materials and craftsmanship. A statement table is chosen for its visual impact. Many tables are both; see also our luxury dining tables.
How high should a pendant hang above a dining table?
About 75–90cm above the tabletop, adjusted for ceiling height and the size of the fitting.
