Bedheads Australia: Velvet, Bouclé, Linen & Rattan Bedheads

The bedhead is the backdrop to the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom, and the fastest way to change how the whole room feels. An upholstered bedhead is also a soft place to lean back with a book.

Our bedheads include tailored panelled designs, dramatic wingbacks, diamond-quilted velvet and hand-woven rattan, in queen and king sizes, plus upholstered full beds. This guide covers sizes, heights, fabrics, mounting, styling and care, using the real measurements of every bedhead in our range.

Bedhead Sizes at a Glance

  • Queen (150 to 165cm wide): Noosa (150cm), Serena (155cm), Celina and Celestine (160cm), Colette (162cm), and Soho, Monroe and Central Park (165cm).
  • King (190 to 196cm wide): Celina, Serena, Celestine and Noosa (190cm), Colette (193cm), Soho (195cm) and Monroe (196cm).
  • Statement width (276 to 327cm): the Bronx Panelled (276 to 278cm queen, 325cm king) and the Monroe with Wings (295cm queen, 327cm king), which extend behind your bedside tables.
  • Height: from a low 101cm (Monroe) to 160cm (Serena, Celestine and Noosa).

Australian mattresses measure roughly 153 × 203cm for a queen and 183 × 203cm for a king, so most of our bedheads frame the mattress with a little extra width on each side.

Soho: tailored panelling

Vertical upholstered panels run all the way to the floor for a tailored, architectural look. The Soho has a timber frame and arrives fully assembled and freestanding. Choose from the Olive Velvet in Queen or King or the White Bouclé in Queen or King. Queen 165 × 140cm, King 195 × 140cm.

Bronx: extended panelled bedhead

The Bronx extends well past the mattress, framing your bedside tables like a hotel suite. It's 130cm high and just 8cm deep, with centre hinges so it folds for delivery. Choose the Natural Linen in Queen (276cm wide) or King (325cm wide), or a queen in Chocolate or Butterscotch (278cm wide). Check your wall width first.

Celina: diamond-quilted velvet

Deeply padded velvet with diamond-stitched quilting, for a classic, glamorous bedroom. The Celina wall-mounts with the brackets supplied and needs no assembly. It comes in Black, Charcoal, French Navy, Nude or Vintage Rose, at 160 × 140cm for a queen and 190 × 140cm for a king.

Central Park: velvet wingback

A winged, panelled silhouette in rich wine velvet on a solid timber frame. The Central Park Wine Queen Bedhead is freestanding, fully assembled and 165 × 28 × 120cm. Allow for its 28cm depth when placing bedside tables.

Monroe: low and contemporary

A sleek, lowered 101cm design in textured oatmeal fabric. Choose the standard Monroe in Queen (165cm) or King (196cm), or the dramatic Monroe with Wings in Queen (295cm) or King (327cm), whose extended wings take the place of a separate wall feature.

Rattan bedheads

Our hand-woven rattan bedheads are made from ethically harvested plantation rattan and hand-finished in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean. They're all slim (4 to 5cm deep) and come in queen and king sizes:

  • Serena: an arched, scalloped crown inspired by early English design, in Mud Grey. Queen 155cm, King 190cm, 160cm high.
  • Celestine: a multi-scalloped crown, heat-bent by hand, with a handwoven mesh inlay, in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean. Queen 160cm, King 190cm, 160cm high.
  • Noosa: a coastal wave-crested crown with a mesh inlay, in Light Mud Grey or Coffee Bean. Queen 150cm, King 190cm, 160cm high.
  • Colette: a clean, straight-topped woven panel, in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean. Queen 162cm, King 193cm, 133cm high.

Upholstered full beds

Want the whole bed in one piece? Our full beds pair an upholstered bedhead with a matching base that runs almost to the floor. Choose the winged Monroe Full Bed in Oatmeal, Paloma Grey or Indigo Sky (295cm wide for a queen, 327cm for a king), or the channel-tufted black velvet Lira Full Bed (218 × 124cm) or Celina Full Bed (165 × 124cm), both in queen.

Choosing the Right Bedhead

How wide should a bedhead be?

Slightly wider than the mattress usually looks best. A queen mattress is about 153cm wide, so a 155 to 165cm queen bedhead frames it neatly. Statement designs like the Bronx and Monroe with Wings deliberately extend 60cm or more past each side, so measure the wall between windows, doors and wardrobes first.

How tall should a bedhead be?

Taller bedheads suit high ceilings and make the bed the focal point; lower ones feel relaxed and suit smaller rooms or windows above the bed. Ours range from 101cm (Monroe) to 120cm (Central Park), 124cm (Lira and Celina full beds), 130cm (Bronx), 133cm (Colette), 140cm (Soho and Celina) and 160cm (Serena, Celestine and Noosa). Remember the mattress and base hide the lower 50 to 60cm.

Can I use a king bedhead with a queen bed?

Yes, as a deliberate oversized look, which works well in large rooms. Check the wall space and that the bedhead can be fixed securely, as fittings are made for the stated bed size.

Wingback or panelled?

A wingback, such as the Central Park or Monroe with Wings, wraps around the bed for a cocooning, hotel feel, but takes more depth or width. A panelled design, such as the Soho or Bronx, adds rhythm and structure while sitting almost flat to the wall.

Bedheads by Fabric

Velvet bedheads

Velvet adds richness and depth. Choose the Soho in olive, the Central Park in wine, or the diamond-quilted Celina in black, charcoal, French navy, nude or vintage rose. Olive suits walnut and brass, navy and charcoal are crisp with white bedding, and nude and vintage rose feel soft and romantic. Velvet can show pressure marks and shading; that's natural to the pile.

Bouclé bedheads

The Soho in white bouclé adds soft, tactile texture that works beautifully with oak, walnut and stone. Bouclé hides dust well, but its loops can snag, so keep it away from jewellery and claws. Explore more in our bouclé furniture edit.

Linen and textured fabric bedheads

The Bronx in natural linen blend and the Monroe in textured oatmeal have a relaxed, natural look that suits Hamptons, coastal and transitional bedrooms. Pair them with pale oak, white bedding and ceramic lamps, or with walnut and black for more contrast.

Rattan bedheads

Rattan brings warmth and craftsmanship without upholstery. Mud Grey feels light and coastal, while Coffee Bean is richer and suits darker timber. Because rattan is a natural material, expect slight variations in colour and finish.

Freestanding or Wall-Mounted?

  • Freestanding: the Soho and Central Park stand on the floor behind the bed, with no drilling.
  • Wall-mounted: the Celina comes with brackets for fixing to the wall. Use fixings to suit your wall type.
  • Full beds: the Monroe, Lira and Celina full beds have the bedhead built into the bed frame.

For other designs, check the product page or ask us before ordering how the bedhead is installed.

How to Measure for a Bedhead

  • Mattress and base width: some upholstered bases are wider than the mattress.
  • Wall width: measure between windows, doors, wardrobes and power points.
  • Bedside tables: make sure wide or winged bedheads won't block drawers, lamps or switches.
  • Ceiling height and windows: check that a tall bedhead won't cover a window sill.
  • Delivery access: measure doors, stairs and lifts. The Bronx folds in half for delivery.

Styling Your Bedhead

  • Bedside tables: balance a tall bedhead with substantial bedside tables. Walnut suits bouclé and linen, mirrored or brass suits velvet, and painted timber suits rattan.
  • Lighting: place table lamps or wall lights at reading height to highlight the bedhead's texture.
  • Bed-end ottoman: finish the bed with a storage bench. Choose a matching set from our bedhead and ottoman sets, or pair the Bronx with the Demi Storage Bench in Chocolate or Butterscotch, or the Celina with a Celina bench such as Textured Pearl.
  • Rug: anchor the bed with a designer rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
  • Layers: contrast textures, such as linen bedding against velvet, or a velvet cushion against bouclé.

Which bedhead suits my style?

  • Contemporary: Soho White Bouclé and Monroe.
  • Glamorous: Celina velvet and Central Park Wine.
  • Hamptons and coastal: Bronx Natural Linen, Colette and Noosa rattan.
  • French and English country: Serena and Celestine scalloped rattan.
  • Boutique hotel: Bronx or Monroe with Wings for wall-to-wall drama.

Bedhead Care

  • Upholstery: vacuum gently with an upholstery brush. Blot spills straight away and never rub.
  • Scotchguarding is recommended for fabric bedheads, and professional dry cleaning is recommended for stains.
  • Velvet: brush lightly in the direction of the pile to refresh it.
  • Rattan: dust with a soft brush and keep away from damp and strong direct sunlight.
  • Avoid leaning wet hair, skincare or fake tan against upholstery, as they can mark the fabric.

Bedhead FAQs

Is a bedhead the same as a headboard?

Yes. "Bedhead" is the Australian term and "headboard" is more common elsewhere.

Do I need a bedhead?

Not strictly, but a bedhead finishes a bed, protects the wall and gives you a comfortable backrest for reading.

What size is a queen bedhead?

Most of ours are 150 to 165cm wide for a 153cm queen mattress. Statement designs like the Bronx (276cm) are far wider.

What size is a king bedhead?

Ours are 190 to 196cm wide for a 183cm king mattress, with the Bronx (325cm) and Monroe with Wings (327cm) going much wider.

Which bedhead is best for a small bedroom?

A slim, freestanding design in a light colour, such as the Soho White Bouclé, or the 4cm-deep rattan bedheads, which take almost no floor space.

Which bedhead is best for high ceilings?

A tall design like the 160cm Serena, Celestine or Noosa, or a wide statement like the Bronx.

Are velvet bedheads practical?

Yes. Velvet is soft and hard-wearing. Vacuum it gently and blot spills quickly; Scotchguarding helps.

Are rattan bedheads comfortable to lean on?

Rattan is firmer than upholstery. Add a couple of large European pillows for reading in bed.

Do bedheads come assembled?

The Soho, Central Park, Bronx and Celina arrive ready to use. The Monroe and the full beds need some assembly.

Should the bedhead match the ottoman?

It doesn't have to. Matching looks tailored, while a contrasting texture, such as a velvet bedhead with a linen bench, feels more collected.

What colour bedhead goes with white walls?

Almost any. Olive, navy, charcoal and wine create contrast, while oatmeal, linen and Mud Grey rattan keep things soft.

Where can I buy designer bedheads in Australia?
