Luxury Chandeliers: How to Choose the Right Chandelier

A beautiful chandelier doesn't just light a room; it transforms it. It is the jewellery of an interior, the finishing detail that people remember long after the evening is over.

Our luxury chandeliers range from cascading Italian-inspired glass and smoky quartz cylinders to natural shell, coconut beads and hand-carved timber. This guide uses real product dimensions to help you choose the right size, style and hanging height for your dining room, living room, entrance or bedroom.

Chandelier Sizes at a Glance

Our chandeliers by width (width × body height, before chain):

Good to know: Width tells you how a chandelier fills a room, but body height decides whether it fits your ceiling. The Lumiere Large is 1.3m tall before the chain, while the Virgin Oval is only 32cm.

What Size Chandelier Do You Need?

Sizing a chandelier to the room

A quick rule: add the room's length and width in metres, and use that number in centimetres as a guide to chandelier diameter.

  • 3 × 3m room: about 60cm, such as the Riviera, Paloma Medium or Lumiere Small.
  • 3.5 × 4m room: about 75cm, such as the Lumiere Medium, Paloma Large or Montreux Medium.
  • 4 × 5m room or larger: about 80–90cm, such as the Montreux Large or Lumiere Large.

Sizing a chandelier to the dining table

Choose a chandelier about half to two-thirds the width of your table, and keep it well inside the table's edge.

  • Round table, 120–150cm: a 60–75cm chandelier, such as the Paloma, Riviera, Virgin or Lumiere Medium.
  • Rectangular or oval table, 2–2.4m: the 90cm-long Virgin Oval follows the line of the table, or use a 72–81cm Montreux or Paloma Large centred above.
  • Long tables of 2.8m or more: consider two matching chandeliers, such as a pair of Lumiere Mediums.

How High Should a Chandelier Hang?

Above a dining table

Aim for 75–90cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier. That keeps the light low and intimate without blocking eye contact across the table.

Matching the chandelier to your ceiling height

  • 2.4–2.7m ceilings: choose a chandelier with a shorter body, such as the Virgin (53cm), Paloma (52–55cm), Montreux Medium (52cm), Lumiere Small or Medium (55–66cm), or the Virgin Oval (32cm). With a standard 75cm table and a 2.7m ceiling, a 66cm-tall Lumiere Medium can hang comfortably at the ideal height.
  • 3m or higher: you can choose taller statement pieces like the Montreux Large (87cm).
  • Double-height entrances and stairwells: the Lumiere Large's 1.3m cascade is made for these spaces. Over a dining table, it suits ceilings of about 3.2m or more.

Walkways and entrances

Where people walk underneath, allow at least 2.1m of clear headroom below the chandelier. Most of our chandeliers come with a chain so the drop can be adjusted.

Important: In Australia, chandeliers must be installed by a licensed electrician, who can also confirm the ceiling can support the weight.

Glass Chandeliers

Lumiere Grand Glass Chandelier

A love letter to Italian mid-century design, the Lumiere has cascading tiers of luminous glass. It comes in three sizes and five colours: large in white, amber, rose or olive; medium in amber, rose, olive or peacock blue; and small in rose. It is our most dramatic chandelier for entrances, stairwells and dining rooms.

Riviera Amber Glass Chandelier

Handmade light amber glass in a flowing, petal-like form with a matte brass patina. The Riviera (60 × 68cm, supplied with 1m of chain) glows warmly in living rooms, bedrooms and entryways.

Virgin Cut Glass Chandeliers

Cut glass and antique brass with dimmable lighting designed to Australian standards. Choose the round Virgin in Smokey Quartz (61 × 53cm) or the linear Virgin Oval (90 × 30cm) in clear or charcoal cut glass. The Oval is one of the best choices in our range above a rectangular dining table.

Montreux Smoky Quartz Chandelier

Cascading tiers of individually crafted smoky quartz glass cylinders create depth and a warm, atmospheric glow. It comes in medium (72 × 52cm) or large (81 × 87cm).

Handmade and Natural Chandeliers

Paloma Shell Chandelier

Tiers of handcrafted natural shell discs in an antique brass frame shimmer softly and move in the air. It comes in medium (60cm, 6.5kg) or large (72cm, 8kg), and is ideal for coastal luxury and elegant dining rooms.

Malindi Coconut Bead Chandelier

The Malindi has cascading strands of ethically sourced, handcrafted coconut beads that bring texture and warmth to coastal, bohemian, Hamptons and contemporary interiors. It is lightweight and dramatic, and suits stairwells and entryways.

Andros Coconut Shell Hanging Lamp

The Andros in black (61 × 49cm) is handcrafted from ethically sourced coconut shells, a striking, tropical-modern statement.

Wood Candlestick Chandelier

Hand-carved organic timber shaped like candles, in black, Hamptons blue, Tiffany blue or cotton candy pink. It is playful and Hamptons-inspired, and works beautifully over a kitchen island or breakfast table. Small splits are part of its handmade character.

Because these pieces are handmade, expect natural variation in colour, texture and shape. That's part of their charm.

Chandeliers by Room

  • Dining room: the classic place for a chandelier. Use the Virgin Oval over long tables, or the Lumiere, Paloma, Montreux or Riviera over round and square tables. See our statement dining tables and white dining tables.
  • Entrance and stairwell: go tall with the Lumiere Large or Montreux Large, or choose the airy Malindi.
  • Living room: centre the chandelier over the main seating area rather than the room, and pair it with dimmable lighting.
  • Bedroom: softer, smaller designs such as the Riviera Amber, Virgin or Paloma Medium.
  • Kitchen or breakfast nook: the Wood Candlestick or Andros adds personality.

Choosing a Colour and Style

  • Clear and white glass: light and airy, suited to almost any interior. Try the Lumiere White or Virgin Oval Clear.
  • Amber: warm, golden and flattering. Try the Riviera or Lumiere Amber.
  • Smoky quartz and charcoal: moody and glamorous, with Art Deco energy. Try the Montreux, Virgin or Virgin Oval Charcoal.
  • Rose, olive and peacock blue: expressive colour from the Lumiere, beautiful against neutral walls.
  • Natural shell, beads and timber: coastal, Hamptons and Mediterranean warmth from the Paloma, Malindi, Andros and Wood Candlestick.

For glamorous schemes, see our Art Deco and Hollywood Regency collections. For coastal homes, browse our Hamptons furniture.

Before You Buy a Chandelier Online

  • Width and body height against your table and ceiling.
  • Chain or drop length and whether it is adjustable.
  • Weight, so your electrician can confirm fixing (the Paloma Large is 8kg).
  • Bulbs and dimming: the Virgin range is dimmable to Australian standards.
  • Access for cleaning, especially over stairs.

Caring for Your Chandelier

  • Glass: switch off and let it cool, then dust gently with a soft cloth or feather duster. Never spray cleaner onto electrical parts.
  • Shell, coconut and timber: dust with a soft, dry brush and avoid moisture and chemicals.
  • High fittings: use a professional cleaner rather than an unsafe ladder.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chandeliers

What size chandelier do I need for my dining room?

About half to two-thirds the width of your table. Choose 60–75cm for a round 120–150cm table, or the 90cm Virgin Oval for a 2–2.4m rectangular table.

How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?

Leave 75–90cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier.

What chandelier suits a standard 2.7m ceiling?

A shorter body of up to about 70cm, such as the Lumiere Medium or Small, Virgin, Paloma, Montreux Medium or Riviera, or the slim 32cm Virgin Oval.

What chandelier suits a high ceiling or double-height entrance?

A tall, cascading design. The Lumiere Large (90 × 130cm) and Montreux Large (81 × 87cm) are made for grand spaces.

What is the best chandelier for a long dining table?

A linear chandelier like the 90cm Virgin Oval, or two matching chandeliers spaced evenly along the table.

Are glass chandeliers still in style?

Yes. Sculptural, coloured and smoky glass designs like the Lumiere and Montreux are a contemporary take on the classic chandelier.

What is the difference between glass and crystal chandeliers?

Crystal is a leaded glass cut to sparkle. Contemporary glass chandeliers use coloured, smoky, cut or sculpted glass for softer, more atmospheric light.

What chandelier suits a coastal or Hamptons home?

Natural materials, such as the Paloma shell, Malindi coconut bead and Wood Candlestick chandeliers, or the Lumiere in white.

What is a shell chandelier?

A chandelier made from natural shell discs that catch and soften the light. Our Paloma has tiers of shell in an antique brass frame.

Are chandeliers dimmable?

Not all. The Virgin range is dimmable, while for others it depends on the bulbs and switch. Ask your electrician about a compatible dimmer.

Can I hang a chandelier in a bedroom?

Yes. Choose a compact design such as the Riviera, Virgin or Paloma Medium, and keep good clearance above the bed.

Can I install a chandelier myself?

No. In Australia, fixed lighting must be installed by a licensed electrician.
