Luxury Outdoor Furniture: How to Create a Beautiful Outdoor Room
The best room in the house might just be outside. A deep woven sofa on the terrace, a hand-carved teak table for long lunches, a pair of loungers by the pool: outdoor furniture should feel every bit as considered as your interiors.
Our outdoor furniture and décor brings together designer outdoor sofas, lounge chairs, sun loungers, dining tables, coffee tables and outdoor rugs for Australian alfresco areas, balconies, verandas and poolsides. This guide uses real product dimensions and materials to help you choose pieces that look beautiful and suit your conditions.
Outdoor Sofas and Lounge Chairs
Outdoor sofas at a glance
Our outdoor sofas from smallest to largest:
- Ravello 2-Seater (130cm): chestnut, synthetic weave on a metal frame, ideal for balconies.
- Marina 2-Seater (142cm): white, aluminium frame with brass-tipped legs.
- Cannes 2-Seater (146cm): natural, synthetic weave with outdoor polyester cushions.
- Ravello 3-Seater (170cm): chestnut.
- Hayman 2.5-Seater (204cm): in natural or French grey, on an aluminium frame, 90cm deep.
- Marina 3-Seater (208cm): in white or natural.
- Amalfi 3-Seater (208cm): in natural or anthracite, on a galvanised frame, our deepest at 95cm.
- Cannes 3-Seater (212cm): natural, our widest outdoor sofa.
What size outdoor sofa do I need?
For a balcony or small patio, a 130–146cm two-seater (Ravello, Marina or Cannes) gives comfortable seating without crowding the space. For a typical Australian alfresco area, a sofa of about 2m (Hayman, Marina, Amalfi or Cannes) anchors the setting. Don't forget depth: our sofas range from 80cm to 95cm deep, and deeper seats feel more like an indoor lounge.
Outdoor lounge chairs and wing chairs
Footstools are also available in the Cannes and Marina ranges. See all outdoor sofas and armchairs.
Outdoor Rattan and Wicker Furniture
Is your outdoor rattan furniture real rattan?
No, and that's a good thing outdoors. Our outdoor woven furniture uses synthetic weave (often called resin wicker or synthetic rattan) over aluminium, galvanised or metal frames. You get the warmth and texture of natural rattan with much better resistance to moisture and sun. Natural rattan is best kept indoors or under deep cover.
Which frame is best?
- Aluminium (Hayman, Marina, Ellis, Parker, Sutton, Amalfi and Ravello sun loungers): light, rust-resistant and easy to move.
- Galvanised steel (Amalfi sofa and lounge chair): very sturdy, with a zinc coating for corrosion protection.
- Metal frames (Cannes, Ravello sofas): check care guidance for salt-air and coastal homes.
How do you clean outdoor wicker?
Brush off leaves and dust regularly, then wipe with mild soapy water and rinse. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, and let the weave and cushions dry completely before covering.
Sun Loungers
Create a resort-style poolside with a pair of loungers and a small side table between them.
- Marina Sun Lounger (202 × 77cm): in white or natural, with an aluminium frame and brass-tipped legs.
- Amalfi Sun Lounger (208 × 68cm): natural, a low, sleek profile.
- Ravello Sun Lounger (208 × 68cm): chestnut, a richer, warmer tone.
Allow the full length of the lounger plus room to walk around it, and keep furniture well clear of pool fences and gates so it can't be used to climb them.
Outdoor Dining Tables and Chairs

Outdoor dining chairs
The Parker (50cm seat) and Sutton (with 68cm-high arms) are woven dining chairs on aluminium frames in natural. Check the arm height against your table's apron so the chairs tuck in.
What size outdoor dining table seats six or eight?
- 4 people: a 120cm round, like the Whitehaven.
- 6 people: a 139–160cm round (Verona, Naples, Byron Bay) or a 2m oval (Whitehaven).
- 8–10 people: a 2.8m rectangle, like the Naples.
How much space do I need?
Allow about 90cm from the table edge to walls, railings or steps so chairs can be pulled out. A 120cm round table needs roughly 3 × 3m, and the 2.8m Naples about 4.6 × 2.9m.
Outdoor Coffee Tables and Side Tables
- Woven with glass top: the Hayman (121 × 76 × 45cm) in natural or French grey, and the Ascot (120 × 75 × 42cm) in natural.
- Woven: the Sardinia (120 × 70 × 44cm) in white or natural, UV and weather resistant.
- Concrete: the round Whitehaven (90cm, white GFRC), the rectangular Morgan (80 × 56cm, grey GFRC), and the Whitehaven Stool, which doubles as a side table.
Choose a coffee table at or slightly below sofa seat height (most of ours are 36–45cm), and leave 45–60cm between the table and the sofa.
Outdoor Rugs
An outdoor rug turns a terrace into a room. Our outdoor rugs from Brink & Campman and Orla Kiely are made from recycled PET polyester, which is soft underfoot and quick to dry.
Size it so at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Under a dining table, allow 60–75cm beyond the edge. Outdoor rugs suit covered areas best; lift or hang them to dry after heavy rain so moisture doesn't sit underneath.
Choosing Materials for Australian Conditions
- Synthetic weave: the most versatile for Australian alfresco living. It is light, weather resistant and easy to clean.
- Teak: naturally oily and durable. Left untreated it weathers to a silver-grey patina; the Naples is finished in grey oil, so re-oil as needed to keep its colour.
- GFRC concrete: the Whitehaven and Morgan pieces are hand-made, water resistant and heavy enough to stay put in the wind. Small surface marks are part of their handmade character.
- Stone resin: the Byron Bay table has the look of stone at a fraction of the weight of solid travertine.
- Cushions: outdoor polyester and water-resistant fabrics shed showers, but bring cushions in, or store them in a deck box, during prolonged rain.
Can outdoor furniture stay outside all year?
Under cover, most of our woven and concrete pieces can stay out year-round with regular cleaning. On fully exposed decks, cover furniture or store cushions in wet weather. Near the coast, rinse frames regularly to remove salt.
Outdoor Furniture Styles
- Coastal: natural weave and pale cushions, such as the Cannes, Marina Natural and Amalfi Natural, with a Lace rug.
- Hamptons: Hayman in French grey or natural, Marina in white, and classic proportions.
- Contemporary: the Amalfi in anthracite with the Whitehaven and Morgan concrete tables.
- Mediterranean: warm teak (Naples, Verona) with natural weave and terracotta tones, like the Lace Tri-Colour Terra rug.
- Resort and poolside: Marina, Amalfi or Ravello sun loungers with a Whitehaven stool between.
Many of our outdoor pieces also suit Hamptons and rattan interiors, and the Whitehaven and Byron Bay tables feature in our white dining tables.
How to Style an Outdoor Lounge
- Start with the sofa, sized to the space.
- Add one or two lounge chairs facing in to create a conversation circle.
- Centre a coffee table 45–60cm from the seating.
- Ground it with a rug to define the zone.
- Layer texture: weave, timber, concrete and outdoor cushions.
- Plan for shade and light: note where the afternoon sun falls, and add lanterns or festoon lighting for evenings.
- Leave 90cm walkways to doors, steps and the pool gate.
Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Furniture
What makes outdoor furniture luxury?
Considered design, generous comfort and quality materials suited to the outdoors: aluminium or galvanised frames, synthetic weave, hand-carved teak and hand-made concrete, all with proportions as refined as indoor furniture.
What is the best outdoor furniture for Australian conditions?
Synthetic weave on aluminium or galvanised frames, teak and GFRC concrete all perform well. Choose based on your exposure (covered or uncovered, coastal or inland) and how much care you are happy to give.
What is the difference between rattan and wicker?
Rattan is a natural plant material, while wicker is a weaving technique. Outdoor "rattan" furniture, including ours, is usually synthetic weave, which handles sun and moisture far better than natural rattan.
Can outdoor wicker furniture get wet?
Yes, synthetic weave is designed to handle rain. Let it dry fully, and store cushions inside during long wet spells.
Does teak turn grey?
Untreated teak weathers to a silver-grey patina. To keep its warmer colour, clean and re-oil it periodically.
What is the best outdoor sofa for a small balcony?
A two-seater of 130–146cm, such as the Ravello, Marina or Cannes, paired with a compact side table or the Whitehaven stool.
What size outdoor dining table seats eight?
A table of about 2.4m or longer. The 2.8m Naples teak table seats 8–10, and the 1.6m Byron Bay round seats 6–8.
What size outdoor dining table seats six?
A 139–160cm round, such as the Verona or Byron Bay, or the 2m Whitehaven oval.
Are outdoor rugs waterproof?
Our recycled PET outdoor rugs are made for outdoor use and dry quickly, but they are not waterproof. Lift or hang them after heavy rain so moisture doesn't sit underneath.
Can outdoor cushions stay out in the rain?
They handle showers, but for longevity, bring them in or store them in a dry box during prolonged rain and over winter.
What outdoor furniture suits a coastal home?
Natural or white synthetic weave on aluminium frames, such as the Cannes, Marina, Hayman and Amalfi, with pale cushions. Rinse frames regularly to remove salt.
What outdoor furniture suits a Hamptons home?
The Hayman in French grey or natural, the Marina in white, and classic woven dining chairs like the Parker and Sutton.
Can I mix outdoor furniture collections?
Absolutely. Link pieces through a shared colour or material, such as natural weave with teak, or white with grey concrete, rather than matching everything.
