Dining Chairs Australia: Rattan, Velvet, Bouclé & Designer Dining Chairs

A beautiful dining table deserves equally beautiful company. Our dining chairs bring together handwoven rattan in Mud Grey and Coffee Bean, hammered brass frames, Art Deco velvet, soft bouclé, natural linen and leather, in designs from relaxed Hamptons to sculptural contemporary.

Whether you're furnishing a six-seater table, choosing carvers for the ends of a long timber table or mixing styles, this guide covers seat heights, widths, carvers, fabrics, styling and care, using the real measurements of every chair in our range.

Choosing Dining Chairs

What seat height suits a 75cm dining table?

Aim for about 25 to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the tabletop. For a standard 75cm table, a 45 to 50cm seat is the sweet spot, which covers most of our range: Marley, Dino and Zen (45cm), Paris, Paltrow, Pasadena and Coco (48cm), Lethbridge (49cm), Angie (49.5cm), and Hayley, Harlow and Capri (50cm).

Our handwoven chairs sit a little higher: Bungalow 51cm, Dominica 52cm, Dynasty and Como 53cm, and Adeline 55cm. They suit taller tables or tables with a thin top and no apron, so measure from the floor to the lowest point under your table before ordering.

How many dining chairs fit around my table?

Allow about 60cm of table edge per person, plus a little more for carvers. As a guide, a 120cm round table seats 4, a 140cm round seats 4 to 6, a 180cm rectangle seats 6, a 240cm table seats 8, and a 280 to 300cm table seats 8 to 10. Check where the table legs or pedestal sit, as they can take up a seat.

How much space do I need around the table?

Leave about 90cm between the table edge and walls or furniture, so chairs can slide out and people can walk behind them. Allow more behind carvers and wide chairs.

Handwoven Rattan Dining Chairs

Our Woven Collection is handcrafted from sustainably sourced plantation rattan and hand-finished in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean. It's the perfect partner for natural timber dining tables and Hamptons, coastal and Queensland-style interiors.

Rattan is a natural material, so expect slight variations in colour and weave from chair to chair. That's part of the character, not a defect. For the kitchen bench, the Dominica also comes as a counter stool in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean.

Are rattan dining chairs comfortable?

Yes. Woven rattan has a gentle give, and the tall backs on Adeline, Dynasty and Dominica offer good support. Add a seat cushion for long dinners.

Do rattan chairs suit modern homes?

Absolutely. Woven texture softens marble, concrete and sculptural furniture. Coffee Bean looks rich against pale floors, while Mud Grey suits lighter, coastal spaces. Explore more in our rattan furniture edit.

Carver Chairs & Dining Chairs with Arms

A carver is a dining chair with arms, traditionally placed at the head and foot of a rectangular table. Mix two carvers with armless chairs along the sides for a considered, layered setting.

Will chairs with arms fit under my table?

Not always. Compare the chair's arm height with the clearance under your tabletop or apron. The Lira's arms sit at 63.5cm and the Cayman's at 66cm, so they need at least that much clearance to tuck in. Also check the gap between the table legs.

Upholstered Dining Chairs

  • Heston: a sculptural cast brass frame with a hand-faceted finish and tailored linen, in Chocolate or Black. 49 × 62 × 85cm, and fully assembled.
  • Angie: a curved open back on a solid timber frame, in Ivory or Brown. 64 × 59 × 84cm, with a 49.5cm seat.
  • Hayley: mid-century curves on a walnut-stained timber frame. The Hayley Dining Chair in Brown has a 50cm seat.
  • Florence: contoured comfort on a slim black frame, in Speckle Brown or Speckle Ecru. 50 × 56 × 81.5cm.
  • Paltrow: clean curves on slender legs, in Natural or Tan Vegan Leather. 51 × 60 × 77cm, with a 48cm seat.

  • Coco and Marley: the Coco Dining Chair pairs a padded natural seat with a black steel frame, while the Marley Dining Chair in Walnut has a solid American oak frame and a linen-toned cushion.

Velvet & Bouclé Dining Chairs

Velvet

Velvet brings colour and a touch of glamour. Choose the Art Deco Paris with its half-moon back in Rust Velvet (55 × 52 × 76cm, 48cm seat), the Capri in Dark Green, Navy or Black velvet (55 × 55 × 81cm, 50cm seat), or the winged Harlow in Grey Velvet. The Paris also comes as a matching Paris Kitchen Stool.

Bouclé

For soft texture, choose the rounded Como in Brick or Gusto Charcoal bouclé on black metal legs (49 × 65 × 82cm, 53cm seat), or the Capri in Fine Grey bouclé. Bouclé can pill with use; a pilling tool removes it easily. See more in our bouclé furniture edit.

Linen

For a natural look, choose the Harlow in Natural Linen (100% linen, black timber legs), the Paris in Natural Linen, the Heston in chocolate or natural 100% linen, or the Dino and Bungalow.

Leather & Indoor-Outdoor Chairs

  • Pasadena: cowhide leather in white on a solid teak base. The Pasadena Leather Dining Chair is 53 × 55 × 87cm, with a 48cm seat. Natural leather can show small markings, which add to its character.
  • Paltrow Tan: an easy-care Tan Vegan Leather option with a warm, leather look.
  • Zen: a white latticed cord chair on a teak base, suitable for indoor or outdoor dining. The Zen Dining Chair is 49 × 56 × 87cm, with a 45cm seat. See our outdoor furniture for more.

Matching Chairs to Your Table

  • Natural timber table: woven Adeline, Dynasty, Dominica or Cayman for a relaxed, artisan look.
  • Dark timber or walnut: contrast with ivory, natural linen or Mud Grey rattan, or go moody with the Bungalow in Charcoal.
  • Marble or stone: the Heston's brass, Paris velvet or Capri for a glamorous finish.
  • Round table: curved backs such as Como, Angie, Paris or Hayley echo its shape.
  • Sculptural base: let the table lead with a simpler chair like Florence, Coco or Marley.

Browse our luxury dining tables, statement dining tables and white dining tables to complete the setting, then add a buffet and a chandelier overhead.

Which chairs suit my style?

  • Hamptons and coastal: Adeline, Dynasty, Cayman, Lethbridge, Harlow Natural Linen and Zen.
  • Contemporary: Como, Capri, Florence, Paltrow and Coco.
  • Art Deco and glamorous: Paris velvet, Heston brass and Dino. See our Art Deco furniture edit.
  • Mid-century: Hayley, Harlow, Lira and Marley.
  • Organic and Queensland style: handwoven rattan in Mud Grey or Coffee Bean with a substantial timber table.

Dining Chair Care

  • Rattan: dust regularly with a soft brush and keep out of strong direct sunlight and damp.
  • Velvet and bouclé: protect from direct sunlight. If cleaning is needed, use a mild pure soap solution with warm water, and remove any pilling with a pilling tool.
  • Linen and upholstered fabrics: Scotchguarding is recommended. Blot spills straight away and use professional dry cleaning where advised.
  • Leather: wipe with a soft, dry cloth and avoid household cleaners.
  • Timber and metal: wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasives.
  • Add felt pads to chair legs and lift chairs rather than dragging them, to protect your floors.

Dining Chair FAQs

What is a carver dining chair?

A dining chair with arms, usually placed at the ends of a rectangular table. Ours include the Adeline Scalloped Carver, Dominica Dining/Carver, Cayman and Heston with Arms.

Can I mix dining chair styles?

Yes. Try carvers at the ends and armless chairs along the sides, or two finishes of the same chair, such as Dominica in Mud Grey and Coffee Bean.

Do dining chairs need to match the table?

No. Contrast often looks more considered, such as woven rattan with a sleek table, or velvet with timber.

What dining chairs suit a natural timber table?

Woven rattan, linen, bouclé and leather all work. Our handwoven Adeline, Dynasty and Dominica were designed to sit with natural timber tables.

What colour dining chairs go with a walnut table?

Ivory, natural linen, rust, tan and charcoal all complement walnut, as does Mud Grey rattan.

What dining chairs suit a marble table?

Upholstered chairs with metal frames, such as the brass Heston, Paris velvet, Capri or Como, balance the coolness of marble.

Are velvet dining chairs practical?

Yes. Our Paris chairs use a performance velvet. Keep velvet out of direct sunlight and clean spills promptly.

Are bouclé dining chairs good for everyday use?

Yes, with care. Bouclé hides crumbs well, but loops can snag on claws and jewellery, and light pilling can be removed with a pilling tool.

Can dining chairs be used indoors and outdoors?

The Zen Dining Chair is designed for both. Our other dining chairs are for indoor use.

Can I use dining chairs as occasional chairs?

Yes. The Angie, Hayley and Florence work beautifully at a desk, in a bedroom or as an accent chair.

Do you have matching kitchen stools?

Yes. The Paris comes as a rust velvet kitchen stool, and the Dominica as a counter stool. See all our bar stools.

Where can I buy luxury dining chairs in Australia?

Attica House offers designer dining chairs in handwoven rattan, velvet, bouclé, linen and leather, with delivery Australia-wide.
